SIERRA LEONE MARITIME ADMINISTRATION

The Maritime Administration was established by an Act of Parliament in the year 2000, being an act to establish an autonomous body for the Registration of ships and other vessels, the licensing and safety of maritime personnel and for the Regulation and development generally of maritime, coastal and inland water transport and for other matters connected therewith.

It is also guided by other regulations such as the Carriage of Deck Passengers Act, 1961, the Registration of shipping Act 1965, and the Merchant shipping Act 2003. The Administration is also steered by International Maritime conventions, codes and other relevant Instruments. The Administration is guided by a Advisory Board, and headed by an Executive Director who is appointed by the President and Head of State

Mission

The vision of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration is to be more efficient on Maritime Administration in the delivery of services hence becoming premier administration in West Central Africa promoting national and international development in the maritime industry.

Vision

The Mission is to regulate and develop improved standards to performance, practice and safety in the shipping industry in Sierra Leone, including the inland waterways transportation and protection of the maritime environment.

Given that safety and security at sea is of sublime importance to the management we are tasked to:

  • ensuring safe, secure, and clean seas
  • promoting the sustainable exploitation of Sierra Leone’s Blue economy
  • protecting lives, property and the marine environment whilst prioritising stakeholder interests, and exploiting the potential of the maritime domain and seafaring industry for sustainable socio – economic growth
